Rammed earth is one of the oldest building techniques on earth and one of the most honest. Layer by layer, raw soil is compressed between formwork until it becomes something harder than most people expect: dense, smooth, and visibly stratified, like a geological record pressed into a wall.
At By Instinto, we don’t use rammed earth as texture or reference. We use it as structure. The architecture happens in the space between these walls defined by their mass, moderated by their thermal inertia, and grounded by the weight of the material itself.
Each wall is site-specific. The soil composition, the mineral palette, the strata visible in section they belong to the land the house stands on. What you’re looking at when you run your hand across one of these surfaces isn’t a finish. It’s the site, compressed.
